Travel Tuesday- Dream Trip

I have started planning a fantasy trip to the Midwest.  It’s silly, I know, but if I were to win a trip anywhere in the world, I’d go to Russell, Iowa and Capa, South Dakota.  I think that because I don’t ask for Paris, I should get two small towns, don’t you?  I can work it in one trip, so they only need to fly me to Minneapolis (see how thoughtful I am?).

Here is my fantasy plan:

Fly into Minneapolis on a Wednesday.  See my Minnesota family and friends Wednesday night and then on Thursday drive to Chariton (it’s a 6-hour drive). Chariton is where I will stay for a few days (it’s close to Russell and where the library and courthouse are).  On Friday, I’ll visit the library and cemetery and just drive around, getting my bearings.  On Saturday, I’ll drive to Oskaloosa, What Cheer and Chillicothe, visiting the libraries and museums there.  On Sunday, I will visit Zero and, if they will have me, visit with my friends in Des Moines.  Monday I will spend in Russell walking the town and exploring.  Monday night will be the Lucas County Genealogical Society meeting, which I will attend.  Then Tuesday I will head to Minneapolis again and pick up Grampa (in my fantasy, Grampa flies out from Seattle to go with me to Capa).  I get Grampa and then we head to Midland where we have a hotel reservation.

We spend a few days in Midland while Grampa walks me through the ghost town of Capa.  We compare my working map with what he remembers this trip and make it more accurate.  I keep copious notes for the book about Capa that I will someday write.

We then head to Sheridan where Grampa can show me the work he did while in the CCCs.  Then to Lead and the other mining towns where Grandma’s family lived/lives.  We head back and I fly him home to Seattle and then come home myself.

I think it’s doable.  It’s my dream trip.  Pathetic, right?  But aside from pathetic… DOABLE!!!  It’s not really a “dream.”  It’s a to-do list for the future.

Travel Tuesday- Connecticut and Massachusetts

Each week the kids study two States for school.  Their studies include the State abbreviation, capital, motto, nickname, flower, bird, song, flag and something interesting.  I play along with people from our family tree database.

This week’s States are:  Connecticut and Massachusetts

Connecticut- BREWSTER, MARKHAM (and how I came to be my own cousin)
Some descendents of William Brewster, of Mayflower fame and glory, settled in Connecticut.  Among them were William Brewster, 3rd great grandson of Mayflower Brewster.  William and his wife, Olive Morgan, had a daughter named Ruth Brewster who was born on 25 Oct 1764 in Lebanon, New London County, Connecticut.  Ruth married James Sherman and they were my 5th great grandparents.  Also in Lebanon, Ruth’s grandfather and great grandfather were buried.

Daniel Markham II, son of Deacon Daniel Markham, was both married in Hartford County, CT and died there.  His daughter, Phoebe, was born and married there.  His son, Israel, was also born and married there.  Phoebe daughter married Israel’s son, which makes me my own cousin.  They are my 6th great grandparents.

Massachusetts- CARR, DOTY, MARKHAM, SOULE, WHITMORE
Massachusetts has too many to list out fully. I’ll just give you some of the surnames:

Carr, Doty, Markham, Soule, Whitmore and all their intermingling.

Travel Tuesday: State Study- Georgia and New Jersey

Each week the kids study two States for homeschool.  Their studies include the State abbreviation, capital, motto, nickname, flower, bird, song, flag and something interesting.  This week, I decided to do my own State study and do a list of people in my genealogy database from the States the kids are studying.  They’ve already done a few, so I’ll jump in on this week and catch up later.

This week’s States are:  Georgia and New Jersey

Georgia- ZIMMERMAN
Only one event in Georgia and that is the marriage of my undocumented 4th great uncle, Philip Zimmerman, and his wife. I haven’t worked on my Zimmerman line, so this is taken from the work of a cousin.  Not sure Phil is even mine, but he’s my only Georgia person, so I’ll list him here.  I have no idea what part of GA they married, but here is who he was to me:

Philip Zimmerman was the son of Barnard Zimmerman, my (apparent) 5th great grandfather.  Another of Barnard’s (apparent) sons was John B. Zimmerman.  John B. Zimmerman married Cynthia Kincaid and their daughter, Mariah E. Zimmerman married Francis Doty.  The John B/Kincaid/Mariah/Francis part I have documentation on.  It’s John B’s parents that I’m not sure about.

New Jersey- DOTY, HULL, HULSE, STONAKER
In NJ I had better luck with family.  My DOTYs where here for a bit with Samuel, son of Edward from the Mayflower coming to Piscataway, NJ from Plymouth.  He was married and died there in Piscataway. His son, Samuel, was also born and died in Piscataway, as was his wife, Elizabeth Hull.  Samuel and Elizabeth had a son named John, also born and died in Piscataway.  From there my line gets sketchy, so I’ll just leave it with this.

My HULSE family (some listed above with Georgia information) begins with Benjamin Hulsaert who was born in the Netherlands and died in Monmouth County, NJ.  His children were in Monmouth County for three generations before my Anthony Hulse moved to Ohio, and then his son and grandson to California much later.

The STONAKER family isn’t entirely mine, as Hal Stonaker was my step-grandfather.  However, I adored him, so his parents are in my family tree.  They were Ansel Dye Stonaker and Ethyl Marlott and both were born and married in NJ.
